The entire of area of Germany contains 2,073 cities rich in culture and diversity. Out of these 2,073 cities there are only 82 cities with inhabitants of 100,000 and include more familiar cities like Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, and Munich. Within those 82 cities, only a handful are actually considered metropolitan areas.

The 82 cities that have populations of at least 100,000 include 15 cities that are capitals of their states. This includes the federal capital of Berlin. Some cities worth mentioning include Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Bremen, Hanover, and Dresden.

There are five actual metropolitan regions of in Germany. Metropolitan regions are the areas which are considered the largest and most densely populated. These cities hold key relevance to the economic and political structure of Germany. They amass a large chunk of the employments in Germany and generate sufficient finances to compete in the global scale.

Berlin is mostly important due to its political significance. It is both the capital city and one of the 16 states that make up the whole of Germany. Berlin is the country's most populous city, with its residents reaching up to 3.4 million within the city limits. Berlin is also a major center in European politics, culture, media, and science. It is a regular tourist destination and a bustling industrial giant as well that is a big part of Germany's success.

Frankfurt (or Frankfurt am Main) is the largest city in the German state of Hesse. And with its population reaching 667,598, it is also the fifth largest of all cities in all of Germany. The city of Frankfurt am Main that we are discussing is different from the smaller city of Frankfurt Oder in the state of Brandenburg. One of the largest terminal stations in Europe, the Frankfurt Central Station is found here in Frankfurt am Main.

The capital city of the German state of Bavaria is Munich, and is also one of the cities considered as one of Germany's metropolitan regions. It is Germany's third largest city, with a population of about 1.3 million.

Hamburg, being Germany's second largest city and having Europe's second largest port in Hamburg Harbour, is also a metropolitan area. Abundant in the arts and culture, especially music and theater, this part of Germany also attracts a regular base of travelers from around the world.

The fifth metropolitan region of Germany is Rhine-Ruhr. With a base population of 11,223,678, Rhine-Ruhr is easily one of the biggest and busiest cities in all of Europe if not at the very least Germany.
